Pultruded FRP Overview

Marco Pultruded Fiberglass Grating is manufactured by assembling two structural fiberglass shapes (cross and bearing bars) into a grid pattern. These bar shapes are made by a pultrusion – a continuous molding process utilizing glass or fibrous reinforcement in a polyester or vinyl ester resin matrix. Selected reinforcement materials like glass strands, mat or cloth are drawn through a resin where the material is thoroughly impregnated with a liquid resin. The fibrous laminate is formed to a geometric shape (T or I) and pulled through a heated steel die.   • Extremely High Loaded Strength: Pultruded Grating products offer superior strength and stiffness. Since glass is the key contributor to structural performance, pultruded offers the highest strength to unit weight ratio.
  • Lightweight & Easy to Install: At about one-fourth the weight of steel, our pultruded grating can easily be lifted and moved by hand, making it easy to install on-site.
  • Corrosion Resistance: The degree of corrosion resistance for pultruded grating is superior to stainless steel, aluminum and galvanized gratings.
  • Non-Conductive & Non-Sparking: Perfectly suited for electrically hazardous locations or conditions, our pultruded grating has inherent insulating properties that reduce the risk of electrical shock. It is also well-suited for many applications where sparks can trigger explosion or fire due to combustible gases build-up.
  • Fabrication Features: Many panel sizes allow for greater use versatility with longer spans which may reduce scrap loss.
  • Safety Surface: The walking surface of most Pultruded Grating have a coarse epoxy grit bonded to both the bearing and cross bars (unless noted).

Pultruded FRP Options

  • Isophthalic Polyester (Type I): Isophthalic polyester resin formulation with a low flame spread rating of 25 or less designed for applications where there is moderate exposure to corrosive elements. (DNV Type Approval).
  • Vinyl Ester (Type V): Vinyl ester resin system with a flame spread of 25 or less for dependable resistance to both acidic and alkaline environments.
  • Phenolic (Type P): A Coast Guard approved flame-resistant phenolic resin with an extremely low flame spread of 5 or less and a smoke index of 45 or less – designed primarily for the offshore industry. (Coast Guard approved for Level 2 performance criteria – DNV Type Approval Certificate ABS Product Type Approval).

Pultruded Sizes

Pultruded grating is available in 1”, 1-1/4” and 1-1/2” depths in an I-bar configuration with 40%, 50% and 60% open areas. 2” depth T-bar configuration with 33% or 50% open area is also available for applications which require wider spans or lower deflections.

VGBA Certified

Marco’s pultruded FRP grating has been tested and has met the specifications set forth by the Virginia Graeme Baker Act (VGBA) for use in VGBA compliant drain systems. This act ensures that the drainage systems are able to withstand heavy duty tasks. We also offer molded and pultruded grating for food processing applications.

How Is Pultruded Different from Molded?

Pultruded FRP grating is often a stronger material and design than molded grating, with a few other key advantages for applications that need broader support. Pultruded grating and fabrication services are often easier to customize, generate more consistent materials and may be more resistant to corrosion and UV because the glass is not as close to the surface as in molded grating.
