Below we have outlined good instructions when fabricating fiberglass grating.
Cutting and Installation Instructions
Cutting FRP Products
Most heavy-duty shop tools can be used to cut FRP, but it depends on the amount of linear feet that needs to be cut. The best tool is a heavy-duty rotary saw with a masonry, carbide or diamond coated blade. To cut curves and angles reciprocating saw or jig saw is best. Cut with the bottom side up so the saw rides on a smother surface, this will reduce chipping. Make sure the panel is firmly secure and allow 3/16” for the blade kerf when measuring. A good standard practice is creating a template of plywood to act as a guide.
Grinding and Finishing FRP Products
To avoid open edges and prevent corrosion of glass fibers the fiberglass grating should be ground and finished. Using an open coated, course gritted, resin fiber grinding disc grind the cut edges smooth. Then re-seal the edges using a comparable resin used in the manufacturing process.
It is important to have the proper support and secure fiberglass grating using these guides. A minimum of 1-1/2” support needs to be provided around all panel bearing edges. Use two (2) “M Style” stainless steel clips (type 316) every 48” (maximum). A minimum of four (4) clips are required for any piece of fiberglass grating.
Safety Preclusions for FRP
Ventilation is key when fabricating FRP. It is also important to be in a brightly lit area. Safety equipment recommended for cutting FRP includes goggles, gloves, dust mask, shop coat, and a fan. Safety goggles are a must for eye protection and dust mask with a fiberglass filter will reduce inhalation. Gloves are good protection to keep FRP particles from the skin as well as protection from the saw itself. A shop coat is recommended with neck and sleeves taped especially when fabricating large amounts of FRP. Use a fan to blow the dust away as the FRP is being cut.
